Ciao
Ok. Yes, I am currently studying abroad in Rome, Italy. I promise to only talk about it when absolutely necessary which will probably be every other sentence. But seriously, this is not a travel blog and it never will be. Anyways, let’s get back on track. Or should I say, remettiamoci in carreggiata.
what to expect when you’Re expecting (to travel)
You look confused
Something I learned while traveling is that not only are you often confused, but you look it. I didn’t realize that confusion was such a distinct and vulnerable expression. To combat the harsh look of preplexion, I’ve tried adopting a look of anger. This works wonders. None of your questions get answered but at least you don’t look like you’ve never seen another human being in your entire life and you can’t speak or understand any language known to mankind.
You’ll figure it out
Here’s the thing. You’ll either figure it out or you won’t. If you don’t figure it out, at least you figured out that you couldn’t figure it out. Good for you.
people don’t like you
Listen. It’s human nature to fear the unknown and in this scenario, that’s you. You are different and thus you are feared. The only positive spin to this is the possibility that you’re always different regardless of your surroundings. Therefore, you may already be accustomed to being feared. Sooooooo, fingers crossed you’re weird I guess.
I fucked up
I fucked up
Apparently, I missed the email saying where my class was supposed to meet today to tour the Roman Forum. Looks like I’ll, once again, be going to bed with zero knowledge on several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Hope I can sleep tonight.
this was funny
The best thing about abroad so far, is the interactions you have with people you literally just met. I met this guy in my class four days ago and today, during our ten minute break, we set an alarm and took power naps together. When the alarm sounded, we simultaneously stretched and through a half yawn went “how’d you sleep?”
In my Italian class we were divided into groups and assigned a food to present on. My group was assigned bread (pane). Naturally, we crafted an inside joke that for our presentation we ought to dress up like individual loafs of bread. Now, when I pass any one of my group members (strangers two days ago) one of us will say “your bread costume come yet?”
